The impact of switching (biological) software brought me an unforgettable, life-changing moment.
Possibly like many folks, I had an identifiable approach to health and fitness over the years, as follows: it was intermittent and inconsistent (bordering on nonexistent for long stretches), or experimental. Also vague. I knew for sure that nutrition and exercise were important, but I didn’t know what I was doing, or even fully why, and even when I found a regular rhythm for a while, I didn’t really know how I’d achieved it. Or therefore how to keep it up.
I’d periodically do running for a few weeks, maybe throw in a semi-regular bike ride, or take a long walk or hike somewhere and say ‘good enough’.
On the nutrition front, I’d ponder red meat consumption, not for any good or clear reason, then be open to vegetarianism, then maybe settle on including chicken and fish. While always thinking I should eat more vegetables. Etc. I felt ineffectual and unevenly motivated.
And the world at large wasn’t much help–the advice wasn’t just all over the map, it was very ‘one-size’ and so conflicting it was pretty much paralyzing.
But still, I knew I was falling short of my potential and the possibility of increased energy, wellbeing and all that comes with that, like a longer, healthier life.
Then in an instant that all changed for me with an experience that tethered nutrition with health in an integrated and holistic (and astonishing) way. With this one event, I was able to close the book on my old (vague, inconsistent, confused) approach to wellbeing.
So what happened, exactly?
In my haphazard and unstructured way I was out on a ‘training’ bike run that I’d done often but not for awhile. I was grinding up the first steep, long hill, when out of nowhere, it felt like somebody had swapped out my standard bike for an electric version.
On every previous attempt, I needed the first side road to recoup some energy (i.e. survive). But this day, it was like I’d been given some kind of booster, or magic bean, or more accurately, some kind of performance enhancing substance. Because this wasn’t just ‘Oh, jeez, my energy is good today,’ but, “This is mind-blowing. What the heck is going on?”
In fact, I knew the only explanation, but would never have made this association.
A few weeks earlier, I’d gotten curious (after a random podcast or two, some blogs) about the ‘biohack’ of eliminating wheat based products. Yup, I’d joined the ranks of the ‘gluten free’. But in my case, it was no joke. (In fact, there were a handful of really significant health changes I’d go on to notice.)
But dropping all things gluten was the first step in unraveling a tectonic concept that I hope will be clearer with an analogy.
I’d been running some of the wrong ‘software’ for my body’s operating system.
Say what?
I talk a lot more about this in a blog article here, but put briefly, for my (biological) operating system, wheat and gluten are incompatible. And eliminating it unleashed some definite flourishing.
Highly inspired, I built on this transformative experience as soon as I could and in every way I was able, which included a year long Functional Medicine Health Coach certificate. Here, I gained invaluable expertise in root cause health, as well as stages of change, motivational interviewing and especially habit formation, the number one force that drives behavior change.
Fast forward to my current passion to help share this knowledge as widely as possible to help you with a health strategy that actually works.
Now, the ‘vague’ and ‘confused’ elements that had been obscuring the path to good health are gone, replaced by a clear and simple understanding of how to proceed and with a toolbox of very effective strategies and techniques. When the approach and answer are clear, motivation becomes almost effortless.
