Fasting

Full fasting - often called ‘water only fasting’ - is an age-old practice that has been incorporated into many cultures, especially via religious practices. In the past, fasting was seen as offering a purification that was entirely for its spiritual outcome rather than for any physiological benefit.

Now, volumes of scientific research in both animal and human studies have identified dozens of very impactful health outcomes including blood sugar regulation, improved heart health and cognitive performance. And not only does fasting cause no harm, it seems clear that our bodies respond very positively to a ‘rest’ from eating, digesting and metabolizing solid food.

With its straightforward ‘just don’t eat anything’ approach, it’s easy to see the appeal, even if actually avoiding food for 24 or 48 hours or more can be very challenging to pull off (and you should always consider involving your medical professional).
